So I did not set a New Year’s Resolution. What I did do was to challenge myself. I am using the wonderful Screen Time feature on my iPhone. I have set a Downtime for my phone, as well as limited the amount of time I spend on social media each day. While I would like to think that I don’t spend too much time on social media, that just isn’t true. If it is the first thing you read in the morning (like it is a newspaper) then you might have an issue. Now don’t get me wrong, I don’t think I am addicted. I actually use social media to lead a Bible Study, to participate in Bible Study, and many other useful things. It is the other things that get in the way. It has become second nature for us to grab our phones when we are bored, or when there is a lull in the conversation, and that’s when it becomes an issue. We should be able to have meaningful conversations at the dinner table, and not watch each other staring at our phones. We are missing a large part of what community is all about.
So, how did my challenge do on the first day? FABULOUS! I can’t believe the amount of time I was able to dedicate this morning to God’s Word instead of social media, etc. I was so proud of myself! I have embarked on a quest to read the Bible in a year, so that is on my agenda each day. I am also participating and leading a few Bible Studies that I must prepare for each day. I was amazed this morning, as I was able to mark all of those things off of my daily agenda…...and all before the workday started. Not only that, but I felt so much better. I had such a feeling of accomplishment, and a more positive attitude to start my day.
I am committed to rising to this challenge. I want to be more intentional with my time. There is no doubt that time spent in God’s Word and in conversation with friends is so much more meaningful that scrolling through my newsfeed. Don’t misunderstand, I am not anti-social media, but I am going to be intentional about my usage.
What do you think?
